Life jacket exchange held June 3
Local residents and visitors to the area had a chance to exchange old and outdated life jackets for new ones at an event held June 3 at the La Paz County Boating Safety Building, which is located on Riverside Drive next to the main Buckskin Fire Station.
The event was sponsored by the Arizona Department of Game & Fish, the La Paz County Sheriff's Office, and the Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. The life jackets were provided by Game & Fish as part of their ongoing promotion of boating safety. They are focusing on life jackets and safe boating practices as the summer boating season gets underway.
Preliminary estimates are that more than 100 life jackets were given away during the event.
On their website, Game & Fish said that, according to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, 86 percent of drowning victims in recreational boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket.
"A life jacket does exactly what it says — it saves your life when you need it," said Danny Rodriguez, watercraft law enforcement programs coordinator said on Game & Fish's website. "However, it can only save your life if you’re wearing one, and often it's too late to put one on once you realize you need it."
Game & Fish, in cooperation with local agencies, will be holding these life jacket exchanges around the state. There will be one from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 10 at the Bullhead City Recreation Building, 2285 Trane Road, in Bullhead City. The next exchange will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, June 10 at the London Bridge Beach Stage, 1340 McCulloch Blvd. in Lake Havasu City.
